Discovery of a Low-mass Companion to the Solar-type Star

چکیده
Brown dwarfs and low-mass stellar companions are interesting objects to study since they occupy the mass region between deuterium and hydrogen burning. We report here the serendipitous discovery of a low-mass companion in an eccentric orbit around a solar-type main-sequence star. The stellar primary, TYC 2534-698-1, is a G2V star that was monitored both spectroscopically and photometrically over the course of several months. Radial velocity observations indicate a minimum mass of 0.037M and an orbital period of ∼103 days for the companion. Photometry outside of the transit window shows the star to be stable to within ∼ 6 millimags. The semimajor axis of the orbit places the companion in the “brown dwarf desert” and we discuss potential follow-up observations that could constrain the mass of the companion.

High-precision radial-velocity observations of the solar-type star 16 Cygni B (HR 7504, HD 186427), taken at McDonald Observatory and at Lick Observatory, have each independently discovered periodic radial-velocity variations indicating the presence of a Jovian-mass companion to this star. متن کاملDiscovery of a Tight Brown Dwarf Companion to the Low Mass Star LHS 2397a
Using the adaptive optics system, Hokupa’a, at Gemini-North, we have directly imaged a companion around the UKIRT faint standard M8 star, LHS 2397a (FS 129) at a separation of 2.96 AU. Near-Infrared photometry of the companion has shown it to be an L7.5 brown dwarf and confirmed the spectral type of the primary to be M8. We also derive a substellar mass of the companion of 0.068M⊙, although mas...
متن کاملOn the Age of Gliese 504
Direct imaging observations of the solar-type star Gl 504 have recently uncovered a faint companion that, on the supposition that the host star has an age of + 160 60 350 Myr, was announced to be a + 4 1.0 4.5 MJ Jovian exoplanet. Here we present the observational evidence that Gl 504 A is an evolved turn-off star of about solar age and by inference its faint companion a low-mass brown dwarf. A...
متن کاملDirect Imaging and Spectroscopy of a Planetary Mass Candidate Companion to a Young Solar Analog
We present Gemini near-infrared adaptive optics imaging and spectroscopy of a planetary mass candidate companion to 1RXS J160929.1-210524, a roughly solar-mass member of the 5 Myr-old Upper Scorpius association. The object, separated by 2.22 or 330 AU at ∼150 pc, has infrared colors and spectra suggesting a temperature of 1800+200 −100 K, and spectral type of L4 +1 −2. The Hand K-band spectra p...
